A new website

There’s a certain satisfaction in doing something yourself.

I’m currently ‘between roles’ in my day job. I work for myself and always hate this bit – chasing up a new contract. It involves PEOPLE and TALKING and COLD CALLING and PUTTING MYSELF OUT THERE. All things I find hideously confronting.

Luckily, I’ve been noticing that my website is terribly old-fashioned and needed to be updated so that I can confidently throw it out there instead of myself. So I had the most wonderful afternoon in front of my computer (the happy place of all writers) with the music blaring.

It’s wonderful how far technology has come. When I created my first website I had a smattering of HTML skills, slightly more than I have now. I downloaded a free theme from Themeforest that I spent days and days working out how to customise for my needs. The Panadol flowed freely, but I did it and boy did it feel great.

This time, with skills that have atrophied through lack of use, I was able to delete my existing site (with backup, of course, in case it all went horribly wrong!), load WordPress, select a theme, and wrangle the customisation, all in an afternoon. I won’t say it was a walk in the park  – I had try a bunch of themes before I found one I could massage into shape effectively. And I still have an issue with making a thumbnail appear when I post it to LinkedIn. But I can’t begin to explain the feeling of satisfaction and chuffness I felt when I’d finished.
